Kati Vasthi

Kati Vasthi – Ayurvedic Therapy for Lower Back Pain

Kati Vasthi is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy designed to relieve lower back pain and stiffness. This external oil therapy, also considered a form of Snigdha Sweda (oleo-sudation therapy), involves holding warm medicated oil on the lower back for a set period, allowing deep penetration into muscles and tissues to ease pain and tension.

“Kati” refers to the lower back, and “Vasthi” means to hold or contain, reflecting the core principle of the therapy. Kati Vasthi is especially effective for issues related to the lumbar spine, chronic back pain, and muscle rigidity.

How the Therapy Works:

  1. A dough is prepared using black gram flour and water and shaped into a ring or small well on the lower back.

  2. Warm medicated oil is poured into the dough ring and allowed to remain for a period. When the oil cools, it is replaced with fresh warm oil.

  3. This process continues for 30–45 minutes, allowing the oil’s therapeutic properties to penetrate deeply.

  4. At the end of the session, the dough and oil are removed, and a gentle massage is performed to help absorb the oil and relax the back muscles.

Kati Vasthi provides effective relief from chronic back pain, muscle stiffness, and Vata-related imbalances, promoting long-term spinal health and overall wellness.
